Meet Our Stylists

For three decades now, Yolanda Killen has been keeping Bloomfield looking good.

Killen, the owner of Yolanda’s Hair Design, 4606 Liberty Ave., was born in Venezuela and raised in Italy, according to her daughter, Sarah. In the 1980s, Killen and her aunt moved to the U.S. and Killen went to cosmetology school.

Thirty years ago, she started Yolanda’s Hair Design with the help of family. Sarah Killen grew up in the salon and has fond memories of it.

“When I was a little girl I would go there and I would help her sweep,” she said “She has plants everywhere in the salon. I would help her water the plants. It’s just a really happy environment, it’s very laid-back. It’s very beautiful inside and light and very colorful. I know a lot of times hair salons feel very cold, but at her salon it’s very warm.”

Sarah Killen has also learned a lot about how to create loyal customers from watching how her mother works.

“I love Bloomfield, and a big part of my life was growing up in the salon and seeing all the customers,” she said. “I’m 19, and I’ve been there my whole life. I go to the salon sometimes, and I see customers who will recognize me and whom I won’t recognize, because they’ll tell me, ‘Oh, I knew you when you were a baby.’ My mom just has something about her that she keeps people coming back for years.”

That atmosphere has kept Sarah Killen coming back, also, to the point where she someday hopes to take over the business from her mother.

Sarah Killen earned her cosmetology license and is attending Robert Morris University, studying accounting.

“My plan in my dream has always been to take over the salon for her, and I would love to keep the family business going,” she said.
